Let’s Play Project Celebrates 25 Years

This year marks a remarkable milestone for one of Banbury’s most cherished charities, as Let’s Play Project celebrates 25 years of supporting children and young people with additional needs through play, friendship, and community connection.

Founded in 2001, Let’s Play began with a simple but powerful mission: to create a safe, joyful space where Young People could access high‑quality play opportunities tailored to their needs. What started as a small local initiative has since grown into a lifeline for hundreds of families across Banbury and surrounding areas, down to Bicester, across to Witney and sometimes further.

Over the past 25 years, the charity has evolved into a thriving hub for children and teenagers aged 5 +, offering after‑school clubs, holiday activities, youth groups, sports, creative sessions, and vital respite for parents and carers. Let’s Play also offers a day care provision for those aged 18+, under the name of Thrive.  Throughout its journey, the organisation has earned a reputation for its warm, person‑centred approach and its commitment to empowering young people to be themselves.   Young People attend gym classes, go swimming, bake cakes and make lunch.  Session Leaders and Playworkers will take time to teach life skills but, at the same time, consider this very much a play environment.

At the heart of Let’s Play’s success is the belief that play is not a luxury—it is a fundamental right. For many families navigating the challenges of SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities), the charity provides not just activities, but community, understanding, and hope. Parents often describe Let’s Play as “a lifeline”, “a second family”, and “the one place my child truly feels they belong.”

The last 25 years have seen significant growth. The charity has expanded its team, developed specialist training for its staff, and built strong relationships with schools, local authorities, and community organisations. Its purpose‑built facility in Banbury has become a vibrant, inclusive space where young people can try new experiences, build confidence, and make lifelong friendships.

As the charity reaches its silver anniversary, Let’s Play is marking the occasion with the launch of a special 25th Anniversary logo, which will appear across campaigns, events, and celebrations throughout 2026. The anniversary year will shine a spotlight not only on the achievements of the past, but also on the young people who are the heart of the charity’s work.

Looking ahead, Let’s Play Project hopes to expand its reach even further, increase opportunities for older young people transitioning into adulthood, and continue raising awareness of the importance of inclusive play. The charity is also planning a series of community events, fundraising activities to commemorate the significant anniversary.

“You don’t just make the children /young adults very happy by providing fun after school clubs, holiday clubs a lot of these children/ young adults would have nothing without Let Play!”

Fundraising is a big part of the day to day running of Let’s Play.   The charity is supported by local business and community groups.  Events such as Bingo, Pub Quizzes, Bake Sales, Fun Days are continuously arranged, not only a great source of fun, but of much needed funds that necessitate the play environment.

As Banbury reflects on 25 years of Let’s Play, one thing is clear: this is more than a charity. It is a beacon of inclusion, a champion for young people with additional needs, and a testament to the power of community compassion.

For a generation of children and their families, Let’s Play has changed lives—and its impact will continue to be felt for generations to come.

Such a valuable charity for the children and young adults in the area !

“If it wasn’t for Let’s Play, and the dedicated amazing staff, my little granddaughter would have nothing to go too.  She is to profoundly disabled to join other mainstream clubs and she loves going to Let’s Play!”
